Banking, Payroll & Taxation - Sponsored Hires

Banking

We will provide an opportunity for you to set up a local bank account during the orientation week. You can also arrange for an ATM through this bank if you so wish. The Business Office will assist you in obtaining one. However, it could take up to three weeks before it is fully operational. Most Sponsor Hire faculty set up a direct order to have a portion of their salary sent to their home of record each month and the balance to the Jordanian bank account (intermediary bank charges apply). This information is shared with us through the completion of the Payroll Forms requested in Phase 2 of the Hiring Document Checklist.

Note: A word of advice about credit cards from the US - they will charge you a fee for international purchases in addition to all the other fees.

Payroll

The annual salary will be issued in 12 equal monthly installments beginning on the 25th of August. At the end of the academic year, you will receive two payments in the month of June (for the month of June and July) to ensure you have been paid the full annual amount prior to the summer break.

Taxation

Teachers’ salaries are set in U.S. dollars and free of Jordanian taxes for “sponsored hires”. Although American employees are required to file tax returns with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, most such teachers qualify for the foreign-earned income exclusion, and pay no taxes on their ACS income, aside from U.S. Social Security. For individuals holding US citizenship, we will deduct 7.65% for Social Security and Medicare, and we will match this deduction with the school's contribution. The same is true with a 5% optional deduction towards an investment plan, which the school matches and sends to LPL Financial (Interactive Brokers).

We provide US Citizens with a statement of earnings at the completion of the tax year (W-2 Form) for you to use in your income tax reporting in the U.S.
