Banking, Payroll & Taxation - Local Hires

Banking

We will provide an opportunity for you to set up a local bank account during the orientation week. If you already have a bank account, you may keep it.

Payroll

Your annual salary will be issued in 12 equal monthly installments beginning on the 25th of August. At the end of the academic year, you will receive two payments during the month of June (for the month of June and July) to ensure you have been paid the full annual amount prior to the summer break.

Taxation

Income from employment in Jordan is taxable. We deduct taxes from your salary and pay them directly to the tax department on a monthly basis. Before you leave, you will need to file a tax return and get a clearance from the tax department. We can give you some tips on how to go about doing that. Moreover, we wanted you to know that in order to benefit from resident tax exemptions, you would need to plan on staying in Jordan until at least July 5th in your last year of service to ACS. To be a resident taxpayer, one should stay in Jordan for 183 uninterrupted days in a calendar year. Otherwise, you will be considered a nonresident, and it is a whole different set of calculations.

Please note, as is the case in the US, when you file your tax return, the tax authorities do their own calculations and you either get a refund or have to pay.
